Site differences related to aspect, topography, moisture <br />conditions, and topsoilinq will compliment Seed Mix No. 1, vary the species composition <br />from site to site, and provide opportunities for diverse communities and habitat. Natural <br />regeneration, variable in composition and degree, will also contribute to diverse <br />reclaimed communities. Shrub planting areas, described in following sections, are <br />included to further enhance the diversity of the recT of med upland areas artd ephemeral <br />drainages. <br />Seed Mix No. 2 (Table 22-2) will be used in areas that are likely to have wet or <br />potentially wet site conditions such as the reclaimed haul road areas along the Dry Creek <br />drainage and the far eastern edge of the tie-across haul road. Additional sites where <br />this mix may be used are the vicinity of Ponds 005 and 006 and any other permanent ponds. <br />The species listed in the mix provide the basis for redevelopment of mesic site or <br />riparian communities. Native species, which are not .available as seed or seedlings, will <br />reestablish in reasonable time frames because of the availability of native plant <br />propog ules in the proximity of the reclaimed areas. Observations of similar areas at the <br />Seneca"11 Mine indicate Typha, Carex, and Juncus species have reestablished naturally. <br />Selected shrub or tree plantings, as discussed later, will complete reclamation of these <br />sites, <br />Seed Mix No. 3 (Table 22-3) is designated for reclaimed areas within the tie-across haul <br />road corridor. The mix has been designed for the wet saline or alkaline conditions and <br />heavy textured soils which are likely to be present wf thin this area, In partfcular, the <br />western end of the haul road corridor and many of the drainages were wet and <br />saline/alkaline prior to construction of the haul road, Dryl and wheat farming using <br />summer fallow techniques to enhance soil moisture levels is a major source of these <br />conditions which will continue following reclamation. Many of the species in the mix will <br />tolerate wet conditions and all are adapted to varying saline/alkaline conditions. Soil <br />textures on reclaimed sites will be clay loam to clay. All species fn Seed Mix No. 3 are <br />able to tolerate these heavier textured soils. <br />Topsoil stockpiles, areas requiring temporary reclamation for approximately one year or <br />longer, and roadside disturbances wit] be seeded with Seed Mix No. 4 (Table 22-4), <br />Species selection was based on the need for rapid establishment; longevity; adaptability <br />to a range of soil textures, aspects, and slopes; sod forming ability; presence of species <br />that have deep root systems or a large and fibrous root mass; and a level of nitrogen <br />•, <br />• <br />J <br />16 <br />
