<br />A RESOLIITION OPPOSING <br />A MINING OPERATION <br />IN WILLZAM3 CANYON <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Teddy Roosevelt, after visiting the Colorado Springs <br />area, said that a "description of the scenery bankrupts the English <br />language"; and <br />WHEREAS, President Reagan's 1985 Commission on Outdoor <br />Recreation determined that the top three adult outdoor activities <br />are: (1) walking for pleasure; (2) driving for pleasure; and (3) <br />sight-seeing; and <br />WHEREAS, recent confirming research by the Colorado Tourism <br />Board has determined that the number one reason people visit <br />Colorado is scenery; and <br />WHEREAS, Colorado Springs' greatest single asset is its <br />natural environment dominated by the mountains and foothills with <br />all their recreational possibilities; and <br />WHEREAS, the Pikes Peak Region is a year round recreation <br />destination and gateway for foreign visitors, athletes and <br />vacationing Americans; and <br />WHEREAS, President Reagan's Commission on Outdoor Recreation <br />concluded that "American social values have changed dramatically <br />over the years, affecting recreational needs..." and that "Quality <br />is the watchword for the 90's and beyond..."; and <br />WHEREAS, many businesses have based their decisions to <br />relocate in the Pikes Peak Region to varying extents on the quality <br />of life here; and <br />WHEREAS, recreation is big business creating jobs and economic <br />vitality in this community; and <br />WHEREAS, protection of environmental quality is important to <br />the life-style of our residents and our guests who visit here; and <br />WHEREAS, there is before the Mined Land Reclamation Division <br />of the State of Colorado an application for the expansion of Snyder <br />Quarry adjacent to Williams Canyon; and <br />WHEREAS, Williams Canyon is one of the most spectacular <br />limestone canyons in the state with many caves and receives <br />thousands of visitors from Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak <br />Region, and from visitors throughout the United States and the <br />world; and <br />WHEREAS, Highway 24 is a major gateway and exit for our <br />community, leaving a lasting impression on all who pass by there; <br />and <br />EXTRA ITEM NO. 1 <br />
