Geotechniwl Data Report Bruce Park Dam
Bowie Resources, Limited
Apri1200t
Section 5 -Laboratory Testing
Proaram
5.1 General
Advanced Tetra Testing, Lakewood, Colorado, performed the laboratory testing under
subcontract to GEI. Laboratory tests were performed in general accordance with methods
established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTi~1). Laboratory tests
included Atterberg Limits, Grain Size Distribution, Hydrometer Analysis, Consolidation,
Unconfined Compressive Strength, Triaxial Shear Strength, Flexible Wall Permeameter, and
Standard Proctor. Results of laboratory tests are presented in Appendix C and summarized in
the following sections and Table 2.
The embankment soils described in the following paragraphs have been divided into "old"
and "new" embankment materials based on a distinct color change observed during drilling
and sampling in Boring BD-105. The "new" embankment materials were considered to be
those placed during the 1950s raise of the dam. The older embankment materials are
assumed to be the distinctly dazk brown materials while the newer embankment materials are
grays and lighter browns.
5.2 Atterberg Limits
Atterberg Limits tests were performed on seven samples; two from the "new" embankment
fill, two from the "old" embankment fill, and three from the foundation materials. The
Atterberg Limits test (ASTM D-4318) is considered an index test and provides a relationship
between the moisture content and the plastic behavior of a soil.
The range of measured liquid limits aze: 46 to 53 for the "new" embankment fill; 31 to 39
for the "old" embankment fill; and 35 to 50 for the foundation materials. The range of
plasticity indices are: 30 to 33 for the "new" embankment fill; 13 to 19 for the "old"
embankment fill; and 20 to 33 for the foundation materials.

GEI COnSUltantS, Inc. 9 992520~~-~6 Geoiecnnical Oau Report
