Memo to Joe Dudash
Bowie No. 2 Mine, TR-06 Geotechnical Adequacy
page 2

stable during operation and following reclamation. As in the case of [he transfer station cut
slope, I suspect that [he material strength information required to complete this specific analysis
has also been derived earlier in the permitting process at the Bowie No. 2 Mine.
(3) Relocated Pond B
In order to accommodate the coal storage pad, BRL proposes to relocate Pond B to a location on
the down slope side of Old State Highway 133. It appears that [he up slope portion will be
excavated while the down slope earthen embankment will be super elevated above the existing
topography. BRL should provide a stability analysis of both the cut slope and embankment to
demonstrate that they will remain stable during operation and following reclamation. As in [he
cases of both the transfer station and the coal storage pad cut slopes, I suspect that the material
strength information required to complete these analyses has also been derived earlier in the
permitting process at the Bowie No. 2 Mine. In this instance, however, test pits may be required
to verify that similar materials have previously been collected for mechanical analysis in the
laboratory.
cc: Larry Routten
doc: C:\COALUAP\BOW2TR06.WPD
JP/jP
