Silt fences and sediment retention berms or ditches witl be maintained alongside roads and
excavation areas to reduce erosion and limit runoff from storm events into seep and riparian
areas as necessary.
(d) The size of area(s) to be worked at any one time;
As stated above in Exhibit D-(a) Minine Plan -Description of Methods, a total of 23.75 acres is
within the proposed permit area of which approximately 20 acres will be ultimately disturbed by
mining activities. The undisturbed areas will consist of the seep azeas, western buffer areas where
topsoil material will be stockpiled and some un-mined areas along the east, west and north sides of
the permit area..
Due to the small size of the current site and notwithstanding the 5.30 acre extension area, it is
anticipated that almost the entire site will be disturbed, excepting the above stated items, by
excavation and or stockpiles prior to [he commencement of any reclamation activities. I[ is not
possible to determine a fixed location for any mobile crushing, screening, asphalt production or
other process equipment that may be used at the site from time to time. Equipment will be located
by the equipment operator near the working face of the mine upon arrival and removed when
processing For the season or a particular project has been completed. Any stockpiles located
within the permit boundary will vary in location as best benefits the operator
Maximum High wall dimensions will be 20 feet vertical by 400 lineal feet unsloped at any one
time and will not encroach on permit boundaries any closer than needed to establish slopes
compatible with the surrounding terrain by dozing vertically down the high-wall face to the pit
floor. A dozer will be used to push material from above in areas where the deposit is thicker than
20 feet so that unstable and unsafe high-walls of over 20 feet are not created. Any high-wall along
the north boundary of the pit will be reduced as the mining proceeds to the east so that no more
than 400 feet of exposed high-wall will be present at any one time. The gravel deposit pinches out
to the south neaz the road so that the south boundary is day-lighted on completion of mining
operations. No impoundments or waste disposal areas are anticipated.
(e) Approximate timetable to describe mining operation;
Mining and crushing activities are currently active under the current Permit # M-2003-092
and lease agreements. Activities commenced at the site in late fa112002. Mining wilt expand
into the extension areas as soon as this application has been approved a revised permit has
been issued. It is estimated that mining activities at the site will be for a period of 10 to I S
years.
(f) Narrative describing nature of deposit to be mined and underlying stratum.
The permit area currently operating as the Gray Pit # I (#M-2003 -092) is a series of small
north south gravel ridges fingering off an east west trending shale ridge (Mancos Shale)
sparsely covered by cedar pinion and sagebrush. The graveUcobble deposits lie above the
Mancos Shale/weathered shale in thicknesses from a few to greater than 50 feet. Soil/topsoil
occurs intermittently across the site from 0 to 60 inches and there is no distinctive overburden
between the soil and the gravel deposit. Slopes are steep to very steep (greater than 15%).
Current operations at the site are conducting facia] extraction of the gravel deposits off the
slope after reserving existent topsoil in the westside topsoil stockpile area. The gravel deposits
