• the plant can only be run during warm weather months . At present,
a maximum of six runs per month are being conducted .
Ancillary facilities necessary for the Company ' s operations
have been constructed on site. These include a laboratory and
watchman ' s trailer (permitted in the original permit ) , a fabrication
and equipment maintenance shop, and an office trailer for field
personnel.
Equipment owned or leased by Marathon or its affiliate
Centennial Gold Corporation is also stored or parked on site.
Please refer to Appendix A for a map of the site plan
and disturbance boundary.
5 . 2 Laboratory Operations
5 . 21 Cyanide Research. The Company has experimented
with several different assay techniques but the most consistent
and successful results have been obtained by cyaniding 5 pound
to 100 pound samples under controlled laboratory conditions .
The tests are run on a batch basis in a totally enclosed, environ-
mentally secure laboratory. The construction of the laboratory
• utilizes bermed concrete of a height sufficient to contain the
total volume of all fluids stored in the building. Should a
catastrophic event occur, no fluids or hazardous materials could
exit the laboratory.
The laboratory has no continuous drainage system.
The seamless, concrete floor is sloped to centralized sumps .
All sumps are discharged to the cyanide destruction tank, and
solutions chlorinated and pH adjusted prior to disposal into
the laboratory disposal site.
A maximum of 36 cyanide tests per week can be conducted.
Each test uses approximately 125 to 180 grams of sodium cyanide.
Weekly maximum cyanide consumption is about 7200 grams, or roughly
16 pounds. A maximum of approximately 4 , 000 pounds of ore samples
can be analyzed per week . On an annual basis some 600 tests
are expected to be run consuming a total of 170 pounds of cyanide
per year contained in less than 30 tons of lab samples.
The cyanide tests are run at a pH of 11 . 5 ( lime adjusted)
in 6 . 5 ft3 cement mixers. A solution to ore ratio ranging from
1 :1 to 3 : 1 is utilized. At the end of each test, the solutions
are alkaline chlorinated with calcium hypochlorite ( swimming
pool bleach) at a pH of 11. 0+. . The cyanide is fully oxidized
by using a 4 : 1 oxidizer to CN- ratio. In order to eliminate
the last vestiges of cyanide, complexed or otherwise, the solution
•
3
