Exhibit J - Vegetation Information
The proposed affected area lies in an area of steep slopes of a
tributary drainage to Fountain Creek called Waldo Canyon. The affected
area has slopes with exposure in all directions. The general area is semi-
arid and the soil types consist of gravelly sandy loams. Rock outcroppings
are also common. The area is transitional between vegetation types of the
upper portion of the pinyon-juniper woodland and woodlands of the lower
mountains.
A plant community survey of the affected area was conducted in the
February, 1988( The site was walked and estimates were made of the
composition of species in the plant community. Since the field work was
done during the winter, some of the plants lacked the structures commonly
used for positive identification. Identification of some species was
therefore not possible. Other plants were tentatively identified on the
basis of morphology and habitat. Snow locally obscured some of ground
cover of the affected area on north-facing slopes.
The native potential plant community would be comprised primarily of
grasses and a lesser amount of shrubs and forbs. Native vegetation in the
potential plant co®unity would include mountain muhly, Arizona end/or
Idaho fescue, wheatgraasea, blue grams, needlegrasses, parry oatgrass, and
:~.
other speci~s. Chars ristic forbs and shrubs and would include mountain
mahogany, Gambel oak, fringed sage, wax current, penstemon, and others.
The ground'c~'~Y~ ~ ~ereent. Trees may invade from adjacent
woodlands and are found where micro climate conditions favor their growth.
