A stockpile of processed SLF material remaining from
the 2003 construction season was also consumed and placed during the course of construction of the
Phase Nc OSA.
Ames began placing SLF in the Phase Nc OSA in May 2004 and completed SLF placement in
September 2004. SLF was compacted to a minimum thickness of 12 inches by a smooth-drum
vibratory compactor. Golder observed SLF depth verification tests performed by Ames to confirm
appropriate fill depth. Any areas that were found to be deficient in thickness were reworked and
retested until the area met specifications. The SLF depth verification is discussed in Section 4.2.6.3.
SLF was moisture-conditioned and compacted as needed to meet project specifications. The
minimum SLF density was 95 percent of the maximum dry density at plus or minus 3 percent of
optimum for bentonite amended SLF and at 3 percent dry of optimum for non-amended SLF, as
determined by standard Proctor tests performed by Golder. Areas of the SLF that initially failed to
meet the density or moisture requirements were moisture-conditioned, if necessary, and re-compacted
to achieve the required compaction.
Prior to geomembrane deployment on the SLF, Ames proof-rolled, compacted, and hand-worked the
• fill surface to be free of desiccation cracks and abrupt grade changes. Golder then inspected the
surface. Sharp or angulaz stones greater than 0.75 inches in diameter were removed from the finished
surface. Golder approved the fill surface prior to release to Poly-Flex. Poly-Flex provided formal
subgrade approval prior to geomembrane deployment. Poly-Flex's subgrade acceptance forms are
presented in Appendix G.
2.7 Ore Storage Area Composite Liner System
The composite liner system in the Ore Storage Area (OSA) includes the following, as detailed in IFC
Drawing 17:
• Minimum of 12 inches of compacted SLF overlain by 80-mil single-sided textured
Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) geomembrane (textured side down).
Poly-Flex installed approximately 2,685,000 squaze feet of 80-mil single-sided textured LLDPE
geomembrane in the OSA (cumulative area from deployment bgs).
