APPROVAL FOR DRILLING OF HOLE
LW9-3 TO MONITOR MINE GASES PERMIT NO. C-81-018. DESERADO MINE
Dear Mr. Mathews:
This application is for a minor revision to the permit to incorporate information on previously drilled
emergency holes LW9-1 and LW9-2 and to drill a vent hole LW9-3 to monitor gases from the recently
sealed longwall area. These activities are described below.
Intormatton on Prevtousty DAlled Emergency Holes LYV9-1 and LW9-2
As you are aware, the Deserado Mine caught on fire near the tailgate end of the longwall LW9 face.
All the underground mine personnel were safely evacuated and fire rescue measures were put in
place. One such measures was to drill two emergency holes, LW9-1 and LW9-2, to pump CO2 gas.
Hole LW9-1 was drilled 1351 feet deep with 6-1/4 inch diameter. Hole LW9-2 was drilled 1330 feet
deep with 6-1/4 inch diameter. A total of 2200 feet of new access was created. The hole locations
and access are shown on Map 138. The working districts were eventually sealed. We estimate a total
surface disturbance of 1.1 aces.
DAl1Ing of Hole LW9
Hole LW9-3 will monitor gases from the recently sealed longwall area. The purpose of such
monitoring will be to assess the fire condition in the sealed area. The hole will be drilled near the
headgate of the face of the longwall panel 9. An attempt will also be made to lower a video camera
through this hole to monitor the condition of The longwall equipment near the face. Map 138 shows
the location and access to the hole. The hole will be 8-5/8' in diameter with an expected depth of
Suite #305
405 Urban Street
lake~vood, Colorado 80228
Telephone 303/988-9626
ihlecapier 303/986-8147
