\ -
' •
J. Dillie
July 11, 1995
Page 2
discharge from the spigots do not always take a straight path into
the pond and meander through hundreds of feet of the beach before
reaching the solution pond. Due to the close spacing, at times
tailings from consecutive spigots have joined together aid moved
into the solution pond as a single discharge point. Spacing the
spigots at 150 foot +/- intervals minimizes the problem and still
provides even deposition in the pond. BMRI will be adjusting the
tailings spigot spacing to provide for a maximum of 150 feet
between spigots, although the spacing may vary between 76 to 150
feet, depending on the area. This spacing does not change either
the environmental protection aspects or reclamation of the
disposal area. We do not view this as a technical revision since
it is simply an operational change and does not reflect any change
in the performance or reclamation of the facility.
TR-020. Containment of the Make-U~ Water Tank Overflows
TR-020 states "the storage area will be approximately 151' x SZ"'
for the make-up water tank overflows. The actual storage area was
not built to this size because the area had to be slightly
decreased due to soft ground in the southwest corner. In the
southwest corner, the overflow storage area is adjacent to the
tank and overflows from the top of the tank would fall outside of
the storage area. In order to resolve this problem, an overflow
pipe was built into the tank. This overflow pipe comes out from
the tank near the top and guides the water directly into the
storage area before the tank itself can overflow.
If you have any questions about this please call me.
Sincerely,
,~
Sally Hayes
Environmental Engineer
cc Anne Baldrige
