Due to the extremely dry year experienced in 1996, vegetative cover on both the dryland
reclaimed and reference areas was lower than previous year's sampling data. Rock content
observed on the reference area contributed significantly to overall cover versus the rock
content observed in the reclaimed area soils. While vegetative cover was better on the
reclaimed areas than on the reference area, rock content make the use of reference area
comparisons invalid. Use of pre-mining data indicates that post mining runoff would be less
than the pre-mining conditions.
7. NORTH FLAT AREA
7.1 Area
' The North Flat Area is a bench on the north end of the top of the hill. A portion of the
area served as a top soil storage area. In this demonstration, the area is divided into two
parcels, one west of Ditch 3N1 (2.32 acres) and one east (0.98 acres).
7.2 Network and Configuration
' 7.3.1 Pre-Vfining State
No large scale mapping or small contour interval mapping is available of the area that
portrays pre-mined conditions. From the small scale mapping available (USGS Chimney
Rock 7.~ Minute Quadrangle), the area drained to the east. Once off the top flat area, the
runoff was down steep slopes into Stollsteimer Creek. In this demonstration, the runoff
captured by Ditch 3N1 (the area west of the ditch) is compared with reclaimed conditions.
and the runoff from areas east of Ditch 3N1 (not captured by Ditch 3N1) is compared prior
to discharge over the steep east-facing slopes.
' 7.2.2 Reclaimed State
As for the pre-mining state, the runoff captured by Ditch 3N1 (the area west of the ditch)
is compared with pre-ming conditions, and the runoff from areas east of Ditch 3N1 (not
captured by Ditch 3N1} is compared prior to discharge over the steep east-facing slopes.
Once Ditch 3N1 is reclaimed, all runoff will be towards the east, similar to pre-mining
conditions.
7.3 Soils
' The area is on Carracas Loam
7.4 Land Use Condition (LUC)
' Reference is made to Paragraph 2.4.
' Page 25 of 34. 7 Oc[ 96
t
