County, Colorado. The legal description of the lands included within the
permit area is a metes and bounds description located in Exhibit 2 of the
approved permit application. The general location of the permit area can be
described as follows:
Lands south of the Purgatoire River, lands east of the South Fork of the
Purgatoire River and Alamosa Canyon, lands north of Vermejo Park, and
lands west of Widow Woman Canyon, containing approximately 17,862
acres.
The mine is located approximately 2 miles east of Segundo and approximately
17 miles west of Trinidad, Colorado, on State Highway 12. The mine site is
located on the U.S. Geological Survey 7.5 minute Quadrangle maps titled
"Tercio", "Weston", and "Little Pine Canyon."
The Lorencito Canyon operation is planned to be a combined surface and
underground operation. The surface operation will be a modified form of
mountaintop removal. Mountaintop removal variances were reviewed as part of
this midterm review. Since operations have not commenced at the mine at this
time, permitting was reviewed under the mountaintop removal performance
standards under Rule 4.26.
