These lands encompass approximately 2,560 acres and aze found on the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle maps of Howard Canyon and Garvey Canyon. The McClane Canyon mine has been in operation since 1977 using typical room and pillar mining techniques to recover approximately 0.3 to 0.6 million tons per year from the Cameo seam, but is authorized to reach a maximum production rate of 1.7 million tons per year. Mine facilities for portals, parking, shops, equipment storage, coal stockpiles and load-out disturb approximately 9.5 surface acres. The Munger Canyon underground coal mine is located in Ga~eld County, Colorado, approximately eighteen (18) miles north of the town of Loma, Colorado, on Bureau of Land Management, and private lands as follows; Township 7 South, Range 102 West 6"' P.M. Sections, 27, 28, 29, 33, and 34; Township 8 South, Range 102 West 6`" P.M. Sections, 2, 3, and 4. These lands encompass approximately 1,049 acres and are found on the USGS 7.5 minute quadrangle maps of Howazd Canyon and Garvey Canyon. The Munger Canyon mine began operations in 1977 to recover Federal coal from the Cameo seam. There was limited coal extraction from the portals and plans for significant expansion of surface facilities and large scale mining in the early 1980's did not occur. The mine was placed in temporary cessation from January 17, 1984. In 1992 the Munger Canyon portals were seated and interim reclamation, i.e. site clean-up, stabilization, and seeding carried out. On November 5, 2004, [he mine was placed in an active status with CO-DMG's approval for the construction of a 4.9 acre waste rock disposal area for materials from the McClane Canyon mine. A total of 19.5 surface acres, including the waste rock disposal area were disturbed by the Munger Canyon mine. Periodic disposal of waste rock from the McClane mine is the oniy activity occumng at the Munger Canyon mine. Description of Permit Areas The McClane Canyon and Munger Canyon mines lie in tributary drainages of East Salt Creek, in upper shrub-steppe foothills transitional to lower montage zones of the Book Cliffs area in [he Colorado Plateau. The area is generally characterized by steep slopes and shallow rocky soils, Drainages are steep and incised with sandstone outcrops from stratified cliff faces and ledges in the mid-range elevations. Elevations at the McClane Canyon mine, and Munger Canyon mines range from 5,300 feet at the western boundary in the East Salt Creek drainage to approximately 7, 000 feet at the northern boundary.
