The Division of Minerals and Geology hereby issues notice, in accordance with Title 34, Article 33, Section 116,
Paragraph 4, of the Colorado Revised Statutes, that on July 17, 2002, an application to revise coal mining
operations at the Lorencito Canyon Mine was considered complete for the purposes of filing. Lorencito Coal
Company, LLC, submitted the revision. All review and comment periods as provided in the Act and the
Regulations initiate from this date of filing.
This surface coal mining operation is on land located approximately 3 miles West of Segundo on Hwy 12 in Las
Animas County. The permit area is further described as follows: Lands south of the Purgatoire River, lands east
of Cow Canyon, lands north of Puertecito Canyon, and lands west of Little Jeff Canyon, covering approximately
3142 acres. The above-mentioned tracts of land aze shown on USGS 7.5-minute Quadrangle map of Little Pine
Canyon. This revision proposes changes to the surface-blasting plan and clarifies information required for blast
logs. The revision also modifies permit text related to the use of a seismograph for data collection from surface
blasts at the site.
The applicant is required to publish notice in a local newspaper [hat this application has been deemed compiete.
At the ttme of publication of this notice, the applicant is additionally required to place a copy of this application at
the Las Animas County Courthouse, 200 East First Street, Room 104, Trinidad, CO 81082, and at the Division
office. For additional information or to provide written comments, contact the Division of Minerals and Geology,
Room 215, 1313 Sherman Sheet, Denver, Colorado 80203, [phone], In order for us to comply with
regulatory time frames, we request that comments be submitted within fifteen (li) days of this letter. If no
comments are received by then, we will proceed on the assumption that you have no concerns with, or objections
to, the applicant's proposal.
