I have the following adequacy comments
with regazd to ground water hydrology information presented in Bowie Resources Limited's
(BRL's) revision applications and existing permit application package (PAP).
1. To date BRL has not mined coal from the B-Seam. It does not appear that BRL has
provided adequate ground water hydrology information for the B-Seam coal and for aquifers above
and below the B-Seam. The Division's Rules require baseline data collection and an ongoing
hydrologic monitoring plan to determine effects of underground mining activities on the quantity
and quality of water in ground water systems in the permit area and adjacent areas. Specifically,
Rule 2.04.7(1) requires the following baseline data:
The depth below the surface and the horizontal extent of the potentiometric surface of each aquifer
above, within and, if potentially impacted, below the lowest coal seam to be mined; and
The lithology and thickness of the aquifers; and
The seasonal quantity and quality of the water within each aquifer.
BRL has provided ground water information for aquifers located above and below the B-Seam coal.
However, the available data do not appear to be complete and sufficient to satisfy the requirements
of Rule 2.04.7(1). BRL has indicated that three wells (DH-57a, DH-58a, and DH-55) monitor
water above the B-Seam, and one well (DH-34B) monitors water below the B-Seam.
The Division has the following comments regarding the adequacy of these wells for monitoring
ground water above and below the B-Seam.
