3.5 Diversion Channel Design
• 3.5.1 General
~tJc?RSi~
An open channel division system will transport upgradient storm water runoff around the spray
evaporation azea as shown in Figure 3-4. The diversion channel has been designed to contain the
100-year, 24-hour precipitation event. A precipitation depth of 2.4 inches, representing the 100-
year, 24-hour storm event for this azea, was obtained from [he NOAA Atlas for Colorado
(National Weather Service, 1973). The method and results of the analyses are described in the
following sections.
3.5.2 Watershed Hydrology
The natural watershed upgradient of the diversion channel system lies directly to the north of the
site (see Figure 3-4). The total contributing watershed area is approximately 420 acres. The
watershed elevation ranges from about 8,600 feet at the evaporation pond elevation up to a
maximum elevation of approximately 10,020 feet. Slopes in the watershed vary from 17 to 68
. percent. The watershed has been divided into 18 basins to calculate peak flow rates at various
locations. The basins were numbered for ease of reference and clarification. Basin
chazacteristics such as basin azea, average surface slope, and corrected hydraulic length aze
summarized in Table 3-1. Detailed computations of the basin characteristics are located in
Appendix B.1 of this report.
•
Battle A/oanlain /7esources, /nc.
