William J. Carter
Re: Demolition of Shop

May 15, 1997
Your main concern appeared to be the possibility of off-site
movement of fuel, oil, grease, and possibly minor amounts of
solvents, especially through groundwater transport. Prior to
removing the underground fuel storage tanks last year, an initial
site assessment was completed. Water samples were taken along Elk
Creek, the most likely location for contamination to be detected
that has a potential to be transported off site. The underground
fuel storage tanks were removed in August, 1996, and the soil
beneath the tanks was sampled.
As part of the surface coal handling modifications contract,
geotechnical-investigation drilling will be conducted in the
facilities area at, or near, the location of major structure
foundations. Samples from the drilling will be split to provide
material for analysis for hazardous material. The drilling planned
should provide sufficient coverage to determine if there is a
potential for off-site transport of contamination.
Sincerel ,
Thomas C.
