Carter
Environmental Protection Specialist
State of Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Re: Demolition of Shop
Minor Revision Number 37
Permit No. C-S1-022
Division of Hunerals ~ Ueology
Dear Mr. Carter:
During your site inspection yesterday, we had a lengthy discussion
regarding demolition of the shop building and the potential for,
and evaluation of, the presence of hazardous materials. I am very
concerned with your expectations for the scope of work required for
this evaluation.
When we informed the Division of our plans to relocate the office,
shop, and warehouse with the submittal of Minor Revision Number 37
on August 12, 1996, the Division responded on September 19, 1996
with a concern for hazardous contamination on the site. We agreed
to put some appropriate language in the permit for testing and
evaluation of hazardous materials with our submittal on October 3,
1996. The minor revision was approved by the Division on October
25, 1996.
Since by that time, it was obviously too late in the construction
season to begin work, the project has been delayed to incorporate
it as part of the contract for the surface coal handling
modifications, currently pending approval as Technical Revision
Number 29. However, relocation of the office, shop, and warehouse
remains as one of the first items of work to be accomplished. Our
current schedule requires construction to start on the new
buildings as soon as the contractor mobilizes on site, probably in
August, assuming a timely approval of Technical Revision Number 29.
Demolition of the existing structures is scheduled following
construction of the new structures, probably in October or
November. During our discussion yesterday, I proposed to complete
the testing and evaluation of hazardous materials during the
geotechnical investigation to be completed this month.
P O B o x 5 3 5 S o m e r s e t C o l o r a d o 8 1 4 3 4 U S A
TEL (970)929-5122 FAX (970)929-5177
