(Golder) has completed the liner load and interface shear strength
tests associated with the 100 mil textured linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) that
was requested by the Cripple Creek & Victor Gold Mining Company (CC&V) as part of
the 1996 Phase II Completion geomembrane evaluation.
Site specific materials were used in the testing. Pad No. 3 and Area No. 2 materials were
processed to meet [he Low Volume Solution Collection Fill and Soil Liner Fill
specifications, respectively. Poly-Flex Inc. provided 100 mil textured LLDPE
geomembrane samples.
The Low Volume Solution Collection Fill / 100 mil textured LLDPE geomembrane/ Area
No. 2 Soil Liner Fill configuration was subjected to a normal load of 385 psi for a period
of 24 hours. The geomembrane was observed to have minor indents from the granular
materials. However, no pinholes or defects were observed when the geomembrane was
vacuum tested. The liner load laboratory report is presented in Attachment A.
Interface shear strength testing was performed for the Low Volume Solution Collection Fill
/ 100 mil textured LLDPE geomembrane /Area No. 2 Soil Liner Fill configuration. The
configuration was loaded to normal loads of 50, 100, 150 and 300 psi and sheared at a rate
of 0.04 inches per minute. Test results indicate that the configuration exhibited a peak
friction angle of 19 degrees and a cohesion of 990 psf, and a residual friction angle of 18
degrees and a cohesion of 865 psf. Interface test results for the Drain Cover Fill / 100 mil
smooth LLDPE /Low Volume Solution Collection Fill configuration is presented in
Attachment B.
In the January 9, 1996 letter to CC&V entitled "Interface Shear Strength Results for the
Phase II Cresson Project", the critical stability for the Phase II Cresson Project was
OFFICES IN AU87RALIA.
