and for watershed.
cobbly loam, pink (7.SYR 714) when moist; mas-
sive; slightly hard, friable; i5 percent basalt
cobbly loam, light brou-n (7.5YR 6/4) when moist;
massive; slightly hard, triable 80 percent basalt
cobbles; much accumulated calcium carbonate but
less than in C2ca horizon; moderately alkaline.
Fragments of basalt make up 35 to 85 ercent, by volume,
the soil. The fine material is loam or clay loam.
UoD Utaline stony loam, 3 to 25 percent elopes.
t soil is gently sloping to steep and is on mesas and
high tet•races. It has the pt•ofile desc]ibed as 1•epresen-
tative of the series.
Included with this soil in mapping are small areas
of Ildefonso soils altd of soils that a]•e about 40 inches
deep to shale.
Runoff is moderate to rapid. The hazard of water
erosion is moderate or high.
This soil is used mainly fot• gt•azing and as wildlife
habitat. Capability unit VIIe-1; Stony Salt Desel•t
Us--Utaline-Shale outcrop contpler. This complex is
rolling to steep and is on mesa and terrace edges and
breaks. It consists of about 65 percent Utaline stony
loam and about 35 percent Shale outcrop. The Utaline
soil has the profile described as representative of the
sel•ies.
Included with this cmnpler- in mapping are a few
small at•eas of Pel•sayo soils.
Runoff is rapid. The hazard of tvatet• el•osion is high.
This soil is used mainly fot• grazing and as wildlife
habitat. Utaline soil is in capability ]snit VIIe-1 and in
Stony Salt Desert range site; Shale outcrop was not
placed in a capability group or in a range site.
Wet Alluvial Lantl
We-Wet alluvial land. This mapping unit consists
of deep alluvium on stream bottoms, flood plains, and
stvales. This alluvium is highly stratined and is mainly
sandy loam or flue sandy loam, The water table is high
for at least part of the year. Vegetation i•. mostly
rushes, sedges, and grasses. The gron•ing seas~~ ~ ranges
ft•om 50 to 75 clays- Capability unit Vw-1; Mountain
bleadow 1•ange site.
Witt Series
The Witt set•ies consists of deep, well-drained soils.
These soils fm'med in eolian deposits on upland hills
and ridges. The slope is 3 to 12 percent, and elevation
is 6,500 to 7,500 feet. The natural vegetation is mainly
sagebt•ush, rabbitbruslt, tcheatgrass, and bluegrass.
The average annual precipitation is 15 incltes. The
mean annual tempet.•thu•e is 50° F., and the frost-free
seasmt is 100 to 125 clays.
In a representative profile the surface layer is
reddish-brown fine sandy loam about 3 inches thick.
The uppet• pat•t of the subsoil is also reddish-bron•n
fine sandy loam about 3 inches thick. The lotvet• part
of the subsoil is reddish-brown or reddish-yellow clay
loam and pink silty clay loam about 91 inches thick.
The substratum is pinkish-white loam that extends to
bedrock, which is at a depth of about 58 inches.
Witt soils have moderate permeability and a high
available water capacity. They are neutral to a depth
of about 17 inches and moderately alkaline below that.
Roots can penetrate to a depth of 50 to GO inches.
These soils are used for grazing, as tildlife habitat,
and as watershed areas.
