The total volume of the completed berm is approxitately 1920 yd3
(1710 yd3 primary fill, 210 yd3 secondary fill). Sand cone tests and/or nuclear tests were
performed in the compacted primary fill to monitor rn silo moisture an~ density during
berm construction at three separate check points, in accordance with the Conceptual
Design specification of one in srtu test per 500 yd3 of material placed. 'Ire approximate
locations and elevations of the check points are shown on Drawing 1. check points in
the compacted primary fill are designated as PF-1, PF-2, and SF-1.
The results in Figure 2 indicate that the in srtre moisture content of the corr~pacted primary
fill at PF-1 measured using the nuclear gauge was outside the acceptable compaction
zone. As a result, a sand cone test also was performed at PF-1 to verify Ehe nuclear test
results. The results of the sand cone test were within the acceptable compaction zone.
The nuclear gauge then was recalibrated, and subsequent nuclear I measurements
performed at PF-2 and SF-2 were within the acceptable compaction zon~s specified for
the primary as shown in Figures 2.
3.3 Synthetic Liner System Installation
After berm construction and final grading was complete, the overflow we~r was installed
and graded a[ side slopes of approximately 2:1 (horizontal:vertical). A (synthetic liner
system then was installed over the berm in accordance with the specifications outlined in
the Conceptual Design Report. Installation of the liner system included the following
tasks:
• Placement of geofabric over the berni;
• Placement of geomembrane panels over the geofabric;
• Welding of geomembrane liner seams;
• Non-destructive and destructive testing of the liner seam welds;
• Anchoring of the liner system at the pond perimeter;
• Repair (patching) of all punctures, holes, and/or tears in the IirJer panels and
seams;
• Installation of liner protection materials on the bottom of the ponds.
Sari Luis Project 6 ~ Cea Trnns, /ric.
nro i«~,inmsU~~i~~n+%vain,~.~..a,m~„n~~an.~.m~,~n~~nTwne,.r i Febn~ar}•2001
