Box 2673
Durango, CO 81302
Subject: "Tozer" Gravel Pit Reclamation Project 112 Permit
Dear Brian,
m enclosing reclamation recommendations for the "Tozer" gravel pit
JUN 5 1%ansion in section 36, Township 36 N, Range 18 W. (52. 9 acres) . The
landowner is Eleanor Tozer & Bureau of Land Management (BLM) ;
operator is Montezuma County. The site is planned for rangeland upon
completion of the extraction phase. This reclamation plan will
initiate upon any movement of topsoil and shall be completed following
establishment of adapted vegetation on all disturbed areas. Soils
maps and soils descriptions are have been sent to you previously.
Topsoil on the site is minimal and the reclamation plan will
incorporate plantings that simulate the adjacent slopes. There is a
concerns with the presence of drainage ways that have potential for
intermittent flooding. The design addresses this problem by avoiding
high risk areas in the 7 phase mining plan.
A. initial Excavation and To soiling:
Excavation of the gravel pit will be done to a maximum depth of 19
inches. Any topsoil shall be stockpiled during the extraction phase
of the project. Upon completion, topsoil shall be replaced to a depth
of 3-6 inches of cover on disturbed areas and berms wherever possible.
Spreading shall not be done when the ground or topsoil is frozen,
excessively wet. After placement is complete, the topsoil surface
shall be finished to a reasonably smooth surface. Final slopes will
be traverseable by livestock or terraced. See design by Maness
Engineering. Locations where drainageways are disturbed will require
adequate diversions to contained and/or re-routed any potential water
runoff.
B. Seedbed Preparation and Planting:
See attached CO-ECS-5, Grass Seeding Planned for the rangeland
reclamation areas. Slopes of less than 4% will use available topsoil;
slopes steeper than 4% will use mulching (see next category) . Apply
40 pounds per acre of available nitrogen fertilizer (disc or harrow
into the soil where possible) during the last operation of seedbed
preparation. If seedbed is soft, allow approximately 2 weeks to 1
month following last operation for soil to settle and firm up.
Planting will be done with a grass drill or modified grain drill with
depth bands or packer wheels on slopes less than 4%; broadcast at
double the drilled rate on steeper slopes. Depth of seed placement
shall not exceed I inch. Row spacing shall be 7-12 inches. Planting
will be done anytime from August 15th through September 15th during
the "summer monsoon" season. Dormant planting is acceptable from Oct.
15th through April 30th.
