ATTACHMENT 1
PROTOCOL FOR BENCH-SCALE TESTING (FREEZE-THAV~ OF SOIL LINER FILL FOR
PHASE II OF CRESSON PROTECT.
• Samples of 1996 Soil Liner Fill and Ironclad Soil Liner Fill will be tested.
• The Soil Liner Fill material will be characterized by grain size distribution and Atterberg
limits.
• Standard Proctor will be performed to identify maximum dry density and optimum water
content.
• Samples will be compacted into molds, one-foot in length. The ends will be covered to
control desiccation.
• Samples will be frozen in a freezer set near 20°F. "Frozen" will be achieved when the
sample is 32°F or lower, and a <_32°F temperature is maintained for twelve hours. The
samples will then be removed to room temperature until the sample has risen to at least 35°F.
• Permeability tests will be conducted after five cycles for all Soil Liner Fill materials
undergoing the testing.
• Comparison will be made between the Ironclad Soil Liner Fill and the 1996 Soil Liner Fill
to ascertain whether any substantial and detrimental increase in permeability is demonstrated.
