line of the shoulders. The left one angles downward somewhat. The legs are
narrow and simply continuations of the lateral body lines. They become
indistinguishable before their lower termini.
The "mouth" consists of a straight, generally horizontal grooved line, with
seven "teeth" each on the upper and lower "lips". The teeth are formed by
narrow, shallow, short grooves.
Impacts/vandalism: Erosion (rain, etc.) and fading appears to have removed
the pigment from the lowest parts of this figure. Other than that, natural
impacts to this figure are not apparent.
The "P" and "L" from the word "TEMPLE" are scratched across the legs of
this figure. This inscription is scratched, apparently with a sharp, hard
instrument.
Cortunents: This is the smallest figure of the panel.
FIGURE 4:
Type of Figure: Anthropomorph
Condition: Figure 4 is complete. It is also extremely hard to see. some
vandalism impacts the figure, as does some natural Fracturing of the cliff face.
Medium: Abraded. This entire figure is formed by abrasion of the surface
of the cliff face. This abrasion has served to smooth the rough prominences of
the sandstone and is thus not continuous in coverage. No direction of abrasion
is apparent.
The eyes on this figure have been pecked. The mouth is grooved, with
possible pecking prior to final grooving of the mouth opening,
Features: This anthropomorph has a head with eyes and a mouth, short
stubby arms, and a long, narrow, slightly trapezoidal body with no legs.
The head is broad, rounded and slightly flattened, on a short neck. The
body is tall and narrow and tapers slightly; there are almost no shoulders. The
bottom of the figure is simply a slightly rounded truncation of the body. No
legs are present.
The arms are very short and stubby, the right one protruding nearly
straight out from the body, the left angling down slightly.
The eyes are wide set, small, and pecked. The mouth is formed by a pecked
and then grooved horizontal line, with five "teeth" each on the upper and lower
"lips". The "teeth" are short, narrow, shallow grooves.
Impacts/vandalism: Two natural cracks cross this figure. One extends
vertically across the right shoulder. The other extends at an angle across the
lower body. This latter crack has had small pieces either exfoliated or removed
from along it through much of the figure. A "B" has been scratched over the left
edge of the body. A small arrow has been scratched adjacent to the side of the
body, pointing toward it. The first "E" from the word "TEMPLE" is scratched over
the lower body. The word "Pudgie" has been scratched across the lowermost part
of the body. All these scratched inscriptions and figures are made with a sharp,
hard instrument.
Comments: This is the only abraded figure on the panel. It is extremely
difficult to see and had not been noted prior to this most recent site visit.
It is best seen when the sunlight shines directly down the cliff face (near noon
in the summer).
General Co~mnents: The original site form suggests that the facial features on
these figures are more recent additions or vandalism; this does not appear to be
the case. The similarity of all the facial features on this panel, and their
condition, suggest that these were part of the original panel, or perhaps a
