Milsap Creek: Nn owls were detected duting a diurnal visit on 2l July. The 1998 nest canyon
contained <t small amount of whitewash and a few casts. In 199R this same area was occupied
by adult and juvenile hirds and contained a large amount of whitewash and casts. Two other
areas within close proximity used by roosting owls in previous years were checked and no hirds
or evidence of owl activity was found. A night visit was not conducted in this canyon due to
time constraints and adverse weather and it is likely that the owls were pverlooked in Milsap
Creek during our day visit. The lack of sign in the main roost areas may indicate that the pair
did not nest here or that the nest attempt failed.
East Mill Creek: One survey was conducted on 24 May from the intersection of trail gulch
and the East Mill drainage proceeding approximately one mile into the canyon. No owls were
seen or heard.
West Mill Creek: Several attempts were made in June and July to survey this canyon. Due to
adverse weather and high flows in the Beaver Creek drainage, this site was not surveyed and
occupancy of Mexican Spotted owls in 1999 is undetermined.
St. Charles Canyon: Both male and female Spotted owls were detected individually on sepa-
rate nocturnal visits to the canyon. The female responded to our broadcast calls on 18 May and
the male on 19 July . Two diurnal visits were conducted on l3 July and 22 July which were un-
successful in finding owls or evidence of owl activity.
Smith Creek: One survey was conducted on 26 May and no Mexican Spotted owls were de-
tected. Two Flammulated owls were heard at separate locations in the canyon. One was heard
calling on a south facing slope in ponderosa pine southeast of the historic Spotted owl roost site
and the second was heard in the drainage bottom in mixed conifer/aspen north of the Smith
Creek Campground.
Fourmile Canyon: One survey was conducted on 2R June and no Mexican Spotted owls were
detected.
Maes Creek: One survey was conducted into this canyon on 22 June. This survey route vas
added because of reports of Mexican Spotted owls by resident Jim McCain who lives at the
