• ~`
6) The mining plan indicates no need for the use of mulch or
stabilizing net/blanket material in the establishment of vegetative
cover, based on past success without use of such techniques. WF~ile
this may be true on level bench surfaces which take advantage of the
retained precipitation, topsoiling, and stability, I would highly
recommend their use on the steeper slope faces and backwalls which
are composed of material feasible to revegetate (i.e. non-bedrock),
in order to ma:cimize opportunity for some revegetation on the slopes.
Any critical erosion, runoff and sedimentation problems will stem
from these sites primarily; the benches themselves are of relatively
minor concern in regard to revegetation potential if backfilled and
topsoiled.
Please accept my apologies for the generality and lateness of
these comments. Having only gained access to the site as of Monday,
June 12, and in keeping with the stated deadline of June 14 for
written comments, an abbreviated review is only permitted at this
time. Mr. Heifner indicated his willingness to cooperate with the SCS
in future plant material trials at the quarry site, whichi we hope to
confirm later this summer. Please feel free to contact me with any
questions.
Sincerely,
~~ ~ ~~
Kenneth D.
