<br /> <br /> <br />J <br />J <br />J <br /> <br />VEGE T A T I ON <br />The Bernard Nine Pit can be characterized as a sandy plains. <br />semi-arid range site supporting a vegetation typified by rases. <br />shrubs, and fortis. Plants noted during inspection o+ t e site <br />were as follows: <br />buffalo grass <br />Arizona fescue <br />Alkali sacaton <br />Little bluestem <br />Sandberg bluegrass <br />Russian-thistle <br />Purple henbane <br />broom snakeweed <br />Yucca <br />Sagebrush <br />Prickly pear cactus <br />Buchloe dactyloides <br />festuca arizonica <br />Sporat~ulus airoides <br />Schizar_hyriui scopar2 <br />Poa sandbergii <br />Salsola i6erica <br />Nyoscyanus niger <br />6utierrezia sarothrae <br />Yucca glauca <br />prteiisia spp. <br />Opuntia coapressa <br />Vegetative cover was less than 10%. <br />Final reclamation of the site will be the establishment of <br />grasses. <br />J SOIL S <br />The soils near the Bernard Nine Pit have been classified <br />USDA Soil Conservation Service as Cascajo sandy loam wit <br />slope. There is no topsoil over the site area. <br />native <br />iy the <br />i a ~% <br />l The Cascajo series consists of excessively drained soils tt}at are <br />moderately shallow over. mixed sandy and gravelly material. <br />The surface layer of these soils is grayish-brown, very riable <br />coarse sandy loam 4 to 8 inches thick. The subsoil is g ayish- <br />brown or brown coarse loamy sand or coarse sandy loam, nd it <br />contains some gravel. A layer of gravelly coarse loamy s nd is <br />at a depth of 12 to 'aU inches. In the lower part of thi Layer <br />is a zone where lime has accumulated. Below a depth of .+U inches <br />is gravelly sand, gravel, or gravelly coarse loamy sand. <br />Water penetrates these soils at a moderately rapid rate. <br />These soils are variable in characteristics but tend to be <br />gravelly and sandy. Gravel is on the surface in some plat s, as <br />is the case at the Bernard Nine Pit. <br />These soils are used mainly for range. The native vegetation is <br />buffalograss, blue grama, sideoats grama, yucca, and sand s ge. <br />D-2 <br />
