Boz 3609
Grand Junction, CO 81502
Re: Colony Mined Land Reclamation Permit Ammendment ~ M-94-005
Dear Mr. McGehee:
Thank you for taking time from your Christmas vacation to review
the Gnlona Pit expansion ammendment proposal with Maurice Potter
and myself. We both appreciated the cooperative attitude
displayed by yourself, the owner and staff members during our
discussion on wildlife concerns.
After reviewing with you which trees will be removed and how the
expanded area will be da~turbed, we feel our concerns on the
impacts of mining activites on bald eagles can be minimized. We
prefer to work with you in a conpet•ative manner mo__r,'toring L'he
situation rather than requesting the DMG place a work time
restriction which may not be necessary. We request pour staff be
aware of these concerns since it is the most apparent wildlife
issue associated with this operation. The issue will continue to
be a high profile subject with the general public and neighbors.
As discussed at the meeting, our recommendation to the Division
of Minerals and Geology is to permit the ammendment as submitted
with the agreement that mining activities along the eastern
boundary of the operation will be temporarily halted if 9. t.
becomes apparent to our division that mining activities are
having a direct impact on the bald eagles using the corridor
along l,kre river. This period would be during the months the bald
eagles use the area which is generally December thru March.
We will collectively monitor activities. If there becomes a
problem, we will sit down with you to discuss the situation and
resolve the issue.
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, itienn=th L.
