D.5.5 HauUAccess Roads
Secondary permanent roads access the surface facilities at the Topaz Mine from County Road
20R. Several historical, existing and proposed secondary access roads are present throughout the
Sunday Mine Complex. These roads provide access to the vent holes, exploration borings, and
other surface features. Permanent roads, reclaimed roads, existing roads, and roads to be included
in the Topaz permit boundary are shown in Figure C-3.
D.5.6 Surface Water Diversions and Drainage Control
Two natural ephemeral drainages run from the south to the north of the east and west sides of the
surface facilities area. Surface water diversion ditches currently exist to the south, and
upgradient, of the surface facilities to divert stormwater away from the surface facilities. A 100-
year, 6-hour storm event was used to evaluate the sizing of these existing channels and ensure
that they will be of sufficient size to permanently divert water around the mining area following
mining activities and reclamation. These diversion ditches are large enough to contain a 100-
year, 6-hour storm event; however, minor slope and alignment modifications will be made.
Additionally, an earthen berm and catchment will be re-constructed along the toe of the expanded
WRA. Another berm will be located at the top of the WRA to prevent surface water from
running off of the surface facilities over the WRA. The catchment and berms are designed
discharge a 100-year, 24-hour storm event via an emergency overflow spillway located to the
west of the catchment basin. The emergency overflow spillway for the 100-year storm discharges
to the ephemeral channel to the west of the catchment basin.
D.5.7 Sanitary and Solid Waste Disposal
A septic system is located west of the maintenance shop and it has been determined that the
system is relatively new. Currently the mine sanitary waste is disposed of in portable toilets that
are serviced by a mine contractor; however, the septic system may be revitalized and used in the
future at the site. Small quantities of inert solid waste (rubble and debris), as defined by the
Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Act, will be disposed of in the WRA during mine operations.
All other solid waste (including, but not limited to, tires, hoses, and plastic sheeting) will be
disposed of in a roll-off container. The container will be emptied and contents disposed of on a
regular basis by a mine contractor. All solid waste will be properly disposed of in accordance to
state and local regulations.
5-23-2QD7 Ezhi6it D Mining Plan D-15
