• southerly and western aspects. Timber stands consist of even-aged mature stands of
Pinus contorta and Populus tremuloides, or multistoried mixed conifer. Detailed
assessment of the vegetation on forest service lands affected by this project including
vigor, age, and forest health are discussed in section 3.7 of USFS EA.
Forb and grass species are limited in densely timbered stands where the forest
understory is shaded. Openings in stands have a greater abundance and diversity of
species and include species common to mid-montane forested environments. Among
the more prevalent grass genus' represented are Poa, Agropyron, Bromus, Alopecurus,
Festuca, Stipa, Phleum, Koeleria, and Dactylis. Grasses are generally cool-season
perennials of variable habit. A common grass-like understory species present in the
project area is Carex geyerii, elk sedge.
A complete listing and discussion of all forbs species is outside the context of this
• Reclamation Plan. Common species, however, include Amica cordifolia, Castilleja
spp., Lupinus spp. Potentilla glandulosa, Fragaria virginiana, Achillea millifolium,
Thalictrum fendleril, Trifolium hybridum, Erigeron spp., and Penstemon spp.
Table 1.
