• Exhibit J- Henderson Mine and Mill Permit Amendment
VEGETATION
Overview
As part of the USFS EA (Henderson Overland Surface Conveyor Environmental
Assessment. Sulphur Ranger District, Arapaho National Forest) process, vegetation
species and communities were assessed during summer 1997 along the conveyor
route in the area of newly affected land. Additional and significantly more detailed
information can be found in the original Henderson Mine and Mill Permit application
(September 1977) and in the USFS EA which was required for the conveyor project as
part of the NEPA process.
Affected uplands, non-transitional or jurisdictional wetland areas, along the PC3 corridor
contain vegetation consistent with original descriptions outlined in the 1977 Henderson
Mine Reclamation Permit. Appendix B of this document contains a map that outlines
vegetation zones within the project area. Vegetation is dominated by a Pinus contorta
vegetation type intermixed with occurrences of Populus tremuloides, Picea
engelmannii, and Abies lasiocarpa. Populus tremuloides occurrence is limited to south
facing slopes and areas indicative of historic disturbance due to fire or windfall. Picea
engelmannii and Abies lasiocarpa are typically located in draws where cold air drainage
and/or phyto-edaphic regimes vary with changes in topography. Table 1 describes the
stand characteristics on newly affected land for PC3 stationing.
Understory vegetation is relatively uniform across the project area. Dominant
understory shrub species include Vaccinium scoparium, Shepardia canadensis,
Arctystaphylos uva-ursi, and Juniperus communis on northern and densely forested
aspects. Species such as Symphoricarpos oreophylus, Artemesia tridentata,
. Ceanothus fendlerii, Amelanchier alnifolia. Mahonia repens, and Rosa woodsii occur on
