RECFivED
INTRODUCTION
oec ~ ~ zoos
Division of Redamation,
Mining and Safety
The Colona Pit was initially perntted through the Division of Minerals and Geology in 1994
under permit number M-94-005. It was planned to mine approximately 30 feet deep in the
second terrace above the Uncompahgre River. The initial permit area only consisted of 37.1
acres, which is only the portion of the property which is owned by United Companies. In 1999,
an amendment to the initial permit was filed in order to allow for mining to take place in the
southern portion of the current permit area on Robert and Bernice Jutten's portion of the
property.
By the end of 2006, the gravel reserves at the current Colona Pit will nearly be exhausted. In
order to further the gravel reserves at the Colona Pit, United Companies would like to mine
deeper in the current pit. It is expected that there is an average of 30-32 more feet of gravel
below what is currently mined; however almost the entire 30-32 feet is below the local static
water table. In this 2006 Amendment, United Companies proposes to mine most of the additional
30 feet and leave two sepazate lakes as part of the reclamation. These lakes will be useful for
both recreational uses in the future as well as wildlife habitat. United Companies will file the
necessary permits with the Colorado Division of Water Resources in order to allow for the
evaporation of the water. The disturbed azea of 63.1 acres will not change for this Amendment.
The pages of this Amendment constitute the full revised permit. The pages and maps from the
1999 Amendment should be deemed obsolete.
In order to protect the wetlands and riparian areas on the lower terrace of the River east of this
pit, no dewatering of the pit will occur using a pit pump. United will simply reach as much
gravel as possible using a track hoe scooping the gravel up from the existing surface. `This will
sacrifice approximately 5 feet of gravel at the bottom of the reserve but it will ensure that the
water levels do not drop in the lower terrace and thus affect these azeas.
Currently, the Colona Pit does not have a Special Use Pernut filed with Montrose County.
Montrose County didn't adopt Special Use regulations until azound the yeaz 2000. Since the
Colona Pit was permitted in 1994 and an amendment was passed in 1999, the Colona Pit did not
Anderson Pit December 06 i-1
