D~~e~o>~
Div. of reclamation, Mining and Safety
Re:Coaldale Gyppsum Quarry
1313 Sherman St. #215
Denver, CO 80203
=,M ~ 1 ~i77- ~y 7
._ ~~~ z
^~ ~ ~-~~
/ 9i,.,.,
Dear Mining and Safety, i ©~~
We have lived in Coaldale Co since 1993. We certainly do not want that
Holcim Inc. to open the mine back up. Coaldale has become a beautiful
community with lots of new homes being built, children and seniors walking
the roads, not to mention all the tourist that come up to the Hayden Creek
Park. We all moved here for the quality of life, the beautiful mountains, the
quiet, and the clean environment.
If your doing this because of money, you could earn more money as the
houses and community builds up. It just will take a little more time but
everybody would profit including the state as well as our wonderful
community. It just wouldn't be the Holcim Inc. profiting, who doesn't give a
rat's patuti about the people, but it would be the Coaldale Community,
Freemont County, the State, the surrounding environment and the whole
world .
Holcim tract record for the EPA is not good. They obviously care more
about taking and pocketing the money than they are with the environmental
concerns and people's health. Their track record according to the
watchdog SCorecard.org suggests that they are the no. 1 producer of
cancer-causing pollutants in CO. Holcim is also in the top 10
dirties/worst Facilities in America as a chemical waste polluter.
According to the latest EPA National Emission Inventory figures posted on
Planet Hazzard.com, Holcim's Florence plant released 6,538,608 pounds
of pollutants into the environment in just one year. Along with 2,147,400
lbs. of Carbon Monoxide, 12,854 lbs. of Hydrochloric Acid, 337 Ibs of
Formaldehyde, and 82 Ibs of Lead, Mercury, and Arsenic compounds into
the air and water.
The blasting would be not be good. Nor would the dust, the ruin of the
mountains. There would be so much truck traffic that someone is going to
be hurt or killed.
The increase traffic would really cause a strain in our way of life and the
quality of our lives here in Coaldale. One also must look at the danger of
the trucks turning off and on to the highway 50. A traffic light would
certainly have to be implemented because of the dangers. Would we have
to get mangled or killed for Holcium or you to do something about this?
Highway 50 is a main highway that people can come into this area. In the
summer, during the hunting season, ski season, spring fishing. There are
so many children and seniors that also hike and walk around our
community that we would have to worry about the walkers.
Also what about the dust control? Would that be a concern? How about
our water supply? Has anybody got someone that's not connected to
Holcim to see if it would contaminate our water supply? We have really
,,,,
.~
