2 Controls on Groundwater Levels
A better understanding of the controls on groundwater levels in the area of the Stegner Farm
gravel mine has been developed since the preliminary evaluation of gro~mdwater conditions was
performed in May 2001. Based on the existing groundwater monitoring data, visual observations,
and climatic data obtained from the Colorado Climate Center for Fort Collins, Colorado, four
principal controls on groundwater levels in the area of the Stegner Farm gravel mine have been
identified. These controls include:
• The local climatic conditions (precipitation, temperature, and evapotranspiration);
• The occurrence, pattern and period of irrigation;
• The slurry wall surrounding the Stegner Farm gravel mine; and
• Groundwater withdrawals from local wells and dewatering operations.
The effect of each of these controls will be discussed in the following sections.
3
