(ASCI) proposed
control plan for tamarisk and Russian Olive on the referenced active mining permit site. I
had needed to wait until spring to see what, if any, tamarisk was located on this site. I
had forgotten what it looked like until I went out to the site specifically to look for it last
week. I am familiar with this invasive species, as I rafted down the Colorado River one
year from Moab to Lake Powell and it has choked the banks. It is there on the Turnpike
site. It is located in isolated shrubs and spazse stands azound the edge of the former lake
that was on the site. See attached photos. We inherited this problem from the current
owners and former operators of this site. This site was released from reclamation
responsibilities in about in 1996 and the bond returned to the operators when the site was
fully reclaimed. ASCI, after leasing the site from the owners, submitted and got
approved the referenced mining permit. This action "re-opened" the site to active mining
and an active "status" with the DMG. As such, we now have a "source" location for
tamarisk, and secondarily, locations of Russian Olive, although Russian Olive is
pervasive on surrounding properties as well.
See attached list of weed control companies in the azea provided to me from the Boulder
County Weed Manager, Tim D'Amato. The best time for eradication of the plant is
apparently late summer and fall, before seed drop. Where this plant occurs, and the area
will not be mined in.the near future, we will attempt to eradicate the plants using one of
the weed control companies listed. The same procedure is being proposed for Russian
~R- i
