King Mountain Sand and Gravel Mine Ecological Resources Assessment
Page 8
4.2.4 Sagebrush Shrubland
The dominant community on the uplands with gravelly well-drained soils. This is a low
Shrubland dominated by mountain big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata ssp. vaseyana),
with some Parry's rabbitbrush (Ericameria parryi) and yellow rabbitbrush
(Chrysothamnus viscidiflorus) (Photo Points MF 1-5, NL 1-3). Bluebunch whea[grass is
the dominant grass, with Columbia needlegrass (Achnatherum nelsonii) and Kentucky
bluegrass common, and small amounts of Thurber fescue (Festuca thurberi) in some
areas. Common forbs include fringed sage (Artemisia frigida), James' buckwheat
(Eriogonum jamesii), and Yhreenerve goldenrod (Solidago velutina). In the western
portion of the property smooth brome is the dominant grass (Photo Point MF 4).
Frank Hewes cut numerous paths through the Shrubland in an attempt to lower the density
of the sagebrush (Figure 4). Most of these paths remain and the sagebrush has been slow
to re-colonize these open areas. The Mine Operator is planning on reseeding these areas
with native plant species.
Common shrubs in the Sagebrush Shrubland include:
rScienti tc Name
themm nels
nii
A
h Common Name__ __
Columbia n
dle
rass
c
na
o
E_lymus trac_hycaulus_
~ g
ee
slender wheatgrass
_
Koeleria macrantha prairiejunegrass
~
Poa pratensis _
Kentucky bluegrass
-
Pseudoroegneriaspicata bluebunch wheatgrass J
4.2.5 Graminoid Wetland
This community is on the floodplain of Egeria Creek adjacent to the Riparian Shrubland,
and along and below the irrigation ditch near the south Property boundary (Photo Points
NL 1-3). Its composition is similar to the understory of the Riparian Shrubland, being
dominated by Nebraska sedge, with some beaked sedge, redtop, tufted hairgrass
(Deschampsia caespitosa) Canada thistle, largeleaf ovens, fringed willowherb, field mint
(Mentha arvensis), and curly dock (Rumex crispus).
Common forbs in [he Graminoid Wetland community include:
Common forbs in the Sagebrush Shrubland include:
Common grasses in the Sagebrush Shrubland include:
