King Mountain Sand and Gravel Mine Ecological Resources Assessment
Page 7
birch (Betula nana) and whitestem gooseberry are fairly common shrubs, and Bebb
willow (Salix bebbiana) and shrubby cinquefoil (Dasiphora floribunda) occur in drier
sites near the edges. The graminoid and forb understory is similar to the floodplain
shrubland except there is little Nebraska sedge.
Common shrubs in the Montane Riparian Shrubland include:
I Sctentific Name __ _
Betula nana
_____
( (Common Name _ 1
_
dwarf birch-
_
Dasiphora floribunda-- __ __
__ _ shrubby cinquefoil_
Lontcera mvolucrata ~twinberry honeysuck
Salix boothit _
1Booth's willow
Salix pzeyeriana _,_^
Sa~lix lucida ssp. lasiandra _ ~Geyer's willow ___~
Pacific willo
w
____
iS' alix ~lanifolia _ _____
_
_ _
idiamondleaf willow i ~
__ _
~Symphoricarpos rotundifolius _ _ _
--r---------y
`__ _ iroundleaf snowberry _
Common forbs in the Montane Riparian Shrubland include:
rScientific Name __ ~
Cirstum arvense COmmOn Name j
Canada thistle
_
E ilobium ciliatum ~ fri~ed willowherb I
Geum macro h ]lum __
-~Y ------
Heracleum
maximum laz eleaf avens ~
g----
cow parsnip
~
__
_
---_ _
Iris missouriensis __ _ __ `
__
~RockYMountain iris
Vicia americana j American vetch I
Common grasses and sedges in the Montane Riparian Shrubland include:
Scientific Name
Agrostis gigantea Common Name___ -~
redtop
_
Calamagros[is stricta slimstem reedgrass
Carex nebrascensis Nebraska sedge
____ __
Carex utricula[a -
beaked sedge
`
__
Phleum pratense ___
Poa pratensts
- - --- ~ __ _
timothy ~~
Kentuck blue rass ~
_ Y_g - J
4.2.3 Mixed Montane Shrubland
There are a few small areas adjacent to and intergrading with Sagebrush Shrubland
where shrub species characteristic of a mixed montane Shrubland occur, including
Saskatoon serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia), chokecherry (Prunes virginiana), wax
currant (gibes cereum), roundleaf snowberry, and Woods' rose (Rosa woodsii) (Photo
Point NL 4). Creeping barberry (Mahonia repens) is in the understory, and bluebunch
wheatgrass (Pseudoroegneria spicata) is the dominant grass. These patches of Shrubland
are not well developed, and some of the shrubs, notably the chokecherry, have been
heavily browsed and are very stunted.
