Box 1556
Rifle, CO 81650
(970)625-3738
FAX: (970)625-5605
Dear Mr. Shuey:
United Companies is responding to your Inspection Report for the Pit 3 permit area (M-
1977-022) that was issued on November 20, 2002. Two of the problems mentioned in
your Inspection Report were:
1. Noxious weeds within the affected area
2. Russian Olive trees required in the approved Reclamation Plan for this site
United Companies agrees that a Technical Revision to the approved Reclamation Plan
will be the best way to handle both of these problems. A weed control plan for the site
has been developed. The weed management plan that is being submitted at this time is
based on Creating a Weed Management Plan: A Handbook for Owners and Mana ers of
Lands with Natural Values. This text is found at an Internet website conceruing the
Colorado Natural Areas Program 2000. The site is found at:
http://parksstate.co.us/chap/IWM_handbook/IWM_index.htm. Iexcerpted the "Weed
Management Plan Outline for Small Properties" template and used it as the basis for the
plan that I am submitting for the Paonia site. The Weed Management Plan for the Paonia
site is attached to this letter.
United Companies recognizes that Russian Olive trees have become a noxious species in
western Colorado. We would be glad to plant Narrowleaf Cottonwood instead of the
Russian Olive that were approved in the Reclamation Plan.
Please contact me with questions or comments about this Technical Revision
Sincerely,
`~--~(c.:~G,a„s--.
Richard Johnson
Resource Manager
Copy to Ms. Suzi Ericksen CDMG -Denver
This letter (including the Weed Management Plan)
Check # 4113452
