Letter to Kathryn F. Cloutier 3 August 11, 2005
Adeauacv of the AM-01 Application Permit No. M-1977-526
public comment letter described the following concerns that are not within the purview of the Mined Land
Reclamation Boazd:
Big truck traffic.
• Increase in noise because of rock crusher, tumblers, etc.
• Damage to property value of a beautiful place.
The following items listed in the letter aze within the Board's purview:
Increase in excessive dust.
• Possible damage to underground aquifer.
In particulaz, Ms. Russell's ground water concern as stated in her letter is the protection of her deep ground
water well. The DMG has reviewed the completion records for this well, and determined that the existing
and proposed future operations at the Worthing Pit will have no impact on the Russell water well. This is
because the well casing is grouted to bedrock to a depth of 145 feet below ground surface; this effectively
isolates the productive zone of the well from the alluvial aquifer in which the Worthing Pit mining is
conducted. As to Ms. Russell's concern with dust from the operation, DMG notes that Exhibit M to the
AM-Ol application lists two permits from the Air Pollution Control Division (APCD) as being in effect at
the Worthing Pit. DMG views obtaining and being incompliance with all required APCD permits to be an
adequate demonstration of sufficient dust control at operations such as the Worthing Pit. Please state
affirmatively that the Worthing Pit has, and is in compliance with all required APCD permits, or describe
what additional permitting or compliance obstacles remain, if any. DMG will contact Ms. Russell to
discuss her letter and our findings. Were Ms. Russell to withdraw her objections to AM-O1, and if no other
objection letters are received, the decision on AM-Ol would be made by DMG with no hearing before the
Mined Land Reclamation Boazd required.
Please respond to the application adequacy items in this letter at your eazliest convenience. If you have any
questions, please contact me at 303-866-4063 or allen.sorensonna,state.co.us.
Sincerely,
Gr/~ L v ~/r~~~
Allen C.
