Rock
346 embankment material shall be placed in layers in accordance with the requirements of subsection
347 203.06.
348
349 Each layer of rock embankment material shall be compacted by routing construction equipment,
350 compactors, or both, uniformly over the entire surface of each layer before the next layer is
351 placed. At least one compactor shall be in simultaneous operation with each separate rock
352 embankment placement operation. Specific types of compactors shall be furnished and used
353 when required by the Contract.
354
355 Each layer of rock embankment shall not be covered by another layer until the Engineer is
356 satisfied that adequate compaction has been obtained. If the Engineer determines that the
357 compactive effort is unsatisfactory, the Engineer may order the Contractor to compact the
358 unsatisfactory area by two additional passes using approved compaction equipment.
359
360 203.09 Proof Rolling. Proof rolling with pneumatic fire equipment shall be performed using a
361 minimum axle load of 18 kips per axle. A weigh ticket from an approved scale shall be fumished
362 by the Contractor to substantiate this weight.
363
364 The subgrade shall be proof rolled after the required compaction has been obtained and the
365 subgrade has been shaped to the required cross section.
366
367 The proof roller shall be operated in a systematic manner so that a record may be readily kept of
368 the area tested and the working time required for the testing. Areas that aze observed to have soft
369 spots in the subgrade, where deflection is not uniform or is excessive as determined by the
370 Engineer, shall be ripped, scazified, dried or wetted as necessary and recompacted to the
371 requirements for density and moisture at the Contractor's expense. After recompaction, these
372 azeas shall be proof rolled again and all failures again corrected at the Contractor's expense.
373
374 Upon approval of the proof rolling, the sub base, base course, or initial pavement course shall be
375 placed within 48 hours. If the Contractor fails to place the sub base, base course, or initial
376 pavement course within 48 hours or the condition of the subgrade changes due to weather or
377 other conditions, proof rolling and correction shall be performed again at the Contractor's
378 expense.
379
3-9
G:1101\00100.02\Hlgeports\KP1TeNniral Sperifralions.EOC February 3,1006
