DAILY REPORT

PROJECT NAME: SAN LUIS MINE PROJECT NUMBER: 92401.00
REPORT DATE: 4/11/97
T0: DAVE HALLMAN, SRK PROJECT ENGINEER
FROM: GLENN GUYER, SRK SENIOR FIELD TECHNICIAN
SUBJECT: LINER REPAIR AND EQUIPMENT EXTRACTION FROM TAILINGS
IMPOUNDMENT.
I arrived on site at 0800 hrs. Chuck McMUrry, Field
Superintendent, Simbeck and Associates, arrived on site with his
equipment to repair the 40-mil VLDPE liner. He brought a~ new roll
of 60-mil HDPE liner. The equipment in use was two MC 8000
portable generators, one Columbine Int. Extruder model k:2-SC,
equipment no. SA-2EW, one 980-C (CAT) front end loader with bar
hoist, one D-SM dozer, one 416 (CAT) back-hoe, one Leister for
tack welding, one Leister Variant for tack welding, two grinders,
one Columbine test apparatus for sheer and peal tests, two vacuum
boxes, one compressor and one vacuum machine.
The weather was cold and windy with light snow. The earth moving
contractor constructed a tent for the liner contractor to work
beneath and furnished heaters to raise the temperature beneath
the tent. The surface of the sub-grade, upon which the liner was
to be placed, was back drug for smoothness and all oversize rock
was removed. I accepted the surface for deployment of HD PE liner
at 1200 hrs.
Prior to further work (1115 hrs.) I asked Mr. Rob Dorey,
Engineer, SRK, for and received permission to deploy the liner
horizontally to the existing slopes.
At 1230 hrs. the ambient temperature was 28 degree F. with
overcast skies, wind from the south at approximately 10 to 15 MPH
light snow and a liner temperature of 36 degrees F. The
temperature within the tent was 39 degrees F.
Trial/pre-welds were completed within the tent confines using
HDPE rod on a seam of 40 mil VLDPE and 60 mil I~JPE. Three peal
tests were completed with 102 PPI (pounds per inch) with film
tear bond, 128 PPI with film tear bond and 107 PPI with non-film
tear bond (failing). The sheer test was Film Tear Bond at 206
PPI. The weld appeared inconsistent in smoothness for the length
of the weld and appeared to have 'water' bubbles.
The Liner contractor stated that he would attempt to get 40 mil
HDPE liner and VLDPE welding rod sent to the site.
