2005 Environmental Correction Work Plan
By the end of the 2006 field season, the isolation of Taylor Gulch drainage from the mine
site will have been addressed. Mine operations during the past several years had
intercepted drainage patterns from Taylor Gulch, resulting in sedimentation deposition in
Taylor Gulch from the lower staging area road crossing of CR 288 approximately 500
feet down gradient to the grated (Colorado Abandoned Mine Program) underground adit
located on the east side of Taylor Gulch just below the lower waste dump (see map Ca).
These carbonate sediments were excavated from the channel bottom and hauled back to
the mine site for grading of the lower staging floor azea. Excavation was performed
down to original soil layer exposure, although a minor amount of cazbonate fines remains
in the drainage. The area will be seeded and mulched in late 2006 or early 2007 field
season. Taylor Gulch drainage was reinforced in two locations where mine operations
had intersected the drainage channel via excavation and rip-rap placement to facilitate un-
restricted flow of Taylor Gulch watershed. The trapezoid channel configuration and rip-
rap placement is shown on the attached drawing. The construction of a waste rock berm
directly east and pazallel to Taylor Gulch will help to insure that future watershed flow
will move un-impeded in Taylor Gulch and will not mix with mine site drainage.
Drainage systems within the mining azea will all flow towards the lower pit area, without
exception. Topsoil materials incurred during mining and development will be placed in
designated topsoil stockpile areas as located on map Cc and seeded for stabilization until
final placement. A sediment fence was installed during the 2005 and 2006 field seasons
located along the base of the lower waste rock dump. This sediment control structure
failed during a stone event in late September, 2005, due to improper grading of the lower
staging area directly above the waste rock dump. The sediment fence system and grading
deficiencies were corrected before the end of the 2006 field season.
2006 Environmental Correction Work
A rip-rap channel structure construction was completed in September, 2006. The
construction is intended to direct surface water flows due to storm events and snow melt
along Taylor Gulch drainage along the eastern boundary of the mine site affected land.
The channel and adjoining berm serve to separate surface flows from adjacent watershed
to the east from mine site surface flows, which are ultimately directed to the lower pit
area. Channel dimensions reflect storm event projection for 100 year event, depth of
channel 5' minimum, 5' across bottom of trapezoid shaped channel and 20' across top of
channel. The channel is lined with 8"-30" mazble rock rip-rap. The newly annoyed
portion of Taylor Gulch runs from north of the FS Road 228 crossing of Taylor Gulch
north app. 250' along the eastern boundary of the permit azea.
The .2 acre road cut on US Lime property lying east of Taylor Gulch was backfilled and
reclaimed in September, 2006. The former road cut was backfilled in 1"lifts, compacted
with a D-9 bulldozer, and capped with topsoil sourced from neighboring channel
excavation work. The final graded site will be seeded and mulched with straw to
promote native grass and forb development. Seed mix and rate will follow the
reclamation plan as listed in Exhibit E.
11
