4.3 Site 3
The objective at this site is to restore a proper riverine ecosystem to a heavily disturbed reach,
from gravel mining, of the river.
Three scales of restoration aze presented for Site 3. Restoration elements common to all three
scales include:
• Channel Reconstruction
• Bank Stabilization and Revegetation
• Boulder Structures
• Irrigation Diversions
• Floodplain Revegetation
4.3.1 Site 3, Scale 1 Description
Meanders would be restored to the first 4,4001inear feet of the site from the south property line
upstream through the two instream gravel pits. In addition to the channel realignment,
approximately 7 acres of floodplain grading and revegetation are proposed to rehabilitate the in-
stream gravel pits. Bank stabilization in this area will consist of 20 j-hooks and 2,000 bundles of
willows.
The Vandiford Ditch will be reconstructed with a permanent concrete headgate and low-head
rock diversion structure to limit annual bulldozing and improve diversion efficiencies. In
addition, the diversion will be designed to allow for fish passage in the river, past the rock
diversion. The initial 4 vertical feet from the diversion structure will be broken up by two, 2-foot
drop/pool rock structures to facilitate fish passage under low flows and stabilize the channel.
The existing pond created by the off-stream pit will be connected to the river by a backwater
channel for additional habitat enhancement. Six addition j-hooks will be constructed between
the existing channel and the off-stream pond between stations 252+50 and 257+50 to prevent
future channel avulsion and enhance habitat.
An additional 1,550 linear feet of channel realignment will begin at station 278+00 to add .-
sinuosity to the channel and reduce gradient. The new channel will be stabilized with 9
additional j-hooks and another 1,000 bundles of willows.
4.3.2 Site 3, Scale 2 Description
The primary impacts at this site lie between the south boundary and the north end of the existing
gravel mining area at the off-stream pond site. Therefore, Scale 2 will concentrate its efforts in
these azeas. The new channel layout in this azea has been changed from its initial proposal in
Scale 1 to a slightly different alignment which better utilizes the existing channel and preserves
more of the existing vegetation. This new alignment will also allow for less placement of topsoil
and better efficiency in the placement of upland trees and shrubs.
31
