Summary - 2 <br />Does Rocky Mountain equate the proposed mining operation as creating jobs? Since <br />automation has taken over the majority of operations, is this also possible in the <br />case of Rocky Mountain? If so, employment would be minimum but the pollution would <br />be great; and is this type of operation worth what it would do to the safety and <br />health of the people both in Canon City and Florence? <br />Many Senior Citizens move to Canon City and Florence because of the CLEAN AIR, and <br />they contribute to the economy of those cities also; however, if Rocky Mountain is <br />granted a permit fora mining operation and their operation pollutes the air with <br />toxins, it is very likely the Senior Citizens may move out. <br />Sometime ago, we had our property surveyed and stakes were laid out so that we knew <br />the location of it. Undoubtedly, the stakes are still there. We intended to fence <br />it in; however, due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to accomplish <br />this. <br />At that time, we also noted: <br />1. There were homes and people living in that area; <br />2. that area has a beautiful view; <br />3. would be a great opportunity and an ideal location to start <br />a housing division; <br />4. would be an ideal area for country living; and, <br />if Rocky Mountain is granted a LIFE OF MINE permit, that will never happen as they <br />will spoil the aesthetic beauty of the area. <br />THE ROLE OF THE MINED LAND RECLAMATION_BOARD (BOARD): <br />The Board's Jurisdiction does not include land use decisions, visual or economic im- <br />pacts, impacts to public roads, noise and other nuisance and socio-economic issues. <br />We are aware of this. <br />These types of issues are handled by local government and are outside the jurisdiction <br />of the Board and Office. <br />COMMENTS: <br />1. As noted above, these types of issues are handled by local government. <br />a. When we received the Public Notice from Rocky Mountain, I called the <br />Fremont County Clerk & Recorder's Office for more information. I was <br />told I could obtain more information from them; and to call Canon City <br />Planning & Zoning, which I did. <br />b. Copy of my March 28, 2003 letter to the Division of Minerals and <br />Geology was sent to them by Certified Mail, return receipt requested, <br />hoping they would take some action in this matter. <br />c. Canon City Planning & Zoning accepted the mail by signing the return <br />receipt on March 31; and, after accepting it, they refused it and <br />returned the mail (unopened) to me. <br />d. We feel, by their act of not accepting the mail and, therefore, not <br />noting and considering our objections and concerns, we were ignored <br />and discriminated against. <br />e. I also called Florence Planning & 7_oning as it is possible the <br />property could border Florence and Canon City and might be under their <br />jurisdiction. The property has sometimes been described as being near <br />or in the Hardscrabble area. <br />I talked to Mr. Don Moore and explained the situation,. I was informed <br />Rocky Mountain could not trespass on our property for use in their <br />mining operation, which we knew they could not do; however, we will, no <br />doubt, check on it periodically. <br />I also sent him a copy of my March 2II letter to Division of Minerals <br />and Geology. They signed the return receipt and accepted the letter; <br />however, to date, we have heard nothing from them. <br />What would be Rocky Mountain's motive in having a mining operation adjoining our <br />property when there is ample space in other areas? The mining operation would <br />directly and adversely affect us; and we object to this intrusion. The property has <br />been in the family since the late 1800's; and it was the wish that the family keep it. <br />
