• <br />4.0 SITE PREPARATION <br />4.1 Clearing, Grubbing, and Striooinq <br />Clearing, grubbing, and stripping shall be done for the <br />embankment foundation areas, tailings disposal area, secondary <br />collection facilities, access roads, and miscellaneous structures, <br />as shown on the Drawings. Clearing involves removal of surface <br />vegetation by a method that mulches the vegetation for inclusion in <br />the topsoil stockpile. Grubbing involves removal of brush roots in <br />excess of ~ inch in diameter in the subsoils. Stripping involves <br />removal of organic soils, or otherwise unsuitable foundation <br />materials, as determined by the Engineer. An organized topsoil <br />stripping pattern with grade stakes shall be impledented by the <br />Contractor as approved by the Engineer to ensure that topsoil is <br />removed without over excavation. The Engineer shall examine the <br />exposed soils to determine their suitability as liner base soils. <br />• ` Clearing, grubbing, and stripping shall extend 20-ft beyond <br />the embankment and synthetic liner limits. Clearing, grubbing, and <br />stripping limits shall extend five-ft beyond diversion structures, <br />access roads, and other facilities. <br />The vegetative and topsoil materials removed during clearing, <br />grubbing, and stripping shall be removed and disposed in topsoil <br />stockpile areas as shown on the Drawings or directed oy the Owner. <br />Topsoil stockpiles shall be located adjacent to the final disposal <br />area limits. Side slopes of topsoil stockpiles shall oe no steeper <br />than 2H:1V. Topsoil stockpiles shall be stabilized by seeding with <br />a quick growing cover crop such as western wheatgrass. <br />4.2 Monitoring Wells <br />Monitoring wells outside of the tailings impoundment area shall <br />be protected and maintained in good operating Condit ion throughout <br />• construction. The Contractor shall be solely responsible for the <br />14 <br />
