SOILS INFORMATION
EXIIIBIT I
A general soils report was conducted by the SCS in 1967. Since then, additional reports have been
made for the site, which were included in the 2003 permit. From the monitoring wells as well as test
pits which were dug in September 2003, a good estimate of the soil thicknesses can be estimated. The
approximate boundaries of the soil types can be seen on Map C-1 A. In general, the entire site contains
two and a half feet of overburden and six inches of topsoil. As described in the mining plan, all
topsoil and overburden will be salvaged and used in reclamation.
Six SCS soil mapping units occur within the general permit area and surrounding area. They are listed
below:
1) the Mesa Clay Loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes, main soil type on the flat area of the terrace, using
symbol MlA on Map C-1.
2) the Menoken-Chacra Clay Loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes, occurring on the flat area of the terrace,
using symbol MkA.
3) the Mesa Gravelly Clay Loam, 0 to 2 percent slopes, occumng on the flat area of the terrace, using
symbol MoA.
4) the Mesa Gravelly Clay Loam, shale substratum, 0 to 2 percent slopes, mostly occurs on the eastern
edge of permit area next to Ru unit, using symbol MsA.
5) the Chipeta-Persayo-Rance Complex, 2 to 10 percent slopes, which occurs only on the
southwestern comer of the permit area, using symbol C1C.
6) the Rough Broken Land, occurs on the steep slopes which lead down to the lower terrace on the
east side of the permit area, using symbol Ru.
The SCS soil descriptions are given in this section. The approximate soil boundaries are shown on
Map C-lA. The topsoils within the permit area are representative of their genesis and topographic
position. The descriptions of the six soil units are given below:
Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine 42
