water regime if huge amounts of water fell as precipitation and this water was needed as surface water
downstream. This is not the case. There is also an added benefit to the depression. For very lazge
runoff events, the depression will capture excess floodwater and prevent damage to azeas east and
north of the site and preventing erosion of the slope between the Spring Creek Mesa and the lower
terrace.
9) Perhaps the most prominent data comes from the 8 water monitoring holes which were installed in
January 2004, through Wildcat Drilling and Pump, Inc. of Cedaredge. All of the holes confirmed the
thickness of the gravel in Phases Al through A4 of 57-64 feet. South of Phase 10, the gravel is 36 feet
deep, as shown by Well W-A8, which was added at the discretion of the operator and not part of the
approved well sampling plan. Well W-A7, drilled at the extreme southern end of the property, shows
no gravel at all. The other 7 wells, W-Al through W-A7, were part of the original plan and were
installed to bedrock as planned.
A revised Map C-1B -Pre-Mining Plan Map shows all well locations and basic log information.
Detailed logs are found in Appendix B.
Irrigation water was delivered to the site and surrounding area during the third week of April,
2004. Since that date, water levels have been monitored weekly at Piezometer wells 1 through
4, which surround the area that current mining is taking place. Mining started in the Phase Al
area (Under the 2003 DMG Permit) during the third week of May, 2004.
The last weekly monitoring report at the time of the submission of this Ammendment was
made on June 28, 2004. See monitoring results in Appendix B. These results show that water
levels have risen only slightly, as predicted from the very beginning. The irrigation has been in
place for approximately 68 days when the June 28 data was taken. This is more than enough
time for the water to reach its approximate high level, given the porosity of the gravel from
previous tests and given the small recharge area draining under the Haldorson Sand and Gravel
Mine.
Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine 37
