1
1
Mrs. Ann Tatum
March 16, 1995
Page 4
1 /16" displacement. Other cracks are found where a closet connects to the west wail of this
room.
Downstairs at the west side of the lintel over the 8 foot wide opening into the family room
there is a significant crack at the north end that extends from the ceiling down to about 5 feet
from the floor which has opened wider to the top displacement of about 3/16". There is an
en-echelon type of tearing in the lower portion of this crack. At this location the sense of
movement is north wall out.
The living room extends back to the kitchen occupying most of the north half of the home.
There are two windows and a door in the north, exterior wall. At the door there are some
minor cracks in the plaster, one extends diagonally off the top west of the door frame,
extending up to a ceiling beam. There is an indication of possible previous minor cracking off
the east corner of the door frame. The west end of the north wall appears to be relatively
crack-free, as is the west wall that separates it from the kitchen area. There is a large
fireplace in the center of the south wall. There is some minor cracking around the hearth, but
that is localized. There is a crack along the east end of the hearth where it connects to the
wall, hairline to 1 /16" top to bottom cutting through the fresh recent paint.
In the kitchen there is a vertical crack at the northwest corner of the kitchen over a closet near
the entrance to the basement. There is also cracking in the plaster with a diagonal component
extending to the wall in the area behind the refrigerator, and the side door entrance.
There is a maid's apartment in the northwest corner of the house. The apartment consists of
a bedroom with a small bathroom at the northeast. There is notable plaster cracking at the
southwest corner of the bedroom. What appears to be relatively fresh plaster cracking with
a diagonal component extends away from the corner of the wall two feet below the ceiling.
Some of the apparent displacement here is probably due to peeling and warping of the plaster,
but the crack itself typically has 1 /8" displacement in the upper half of the wall. This crack
is very fresh and has actually popped the plaster slightly, and has an en-echelon appearance.
The sense of motion is an extensional feature in the top half of the wall. There is a window
in the west wall. A diagonal crack that looks quite fresh extends off the north corner of this
window. It initiates about a foot below the top to the lintel. There is a crack vertically off the
top corner. There is some cracking in the very top of the west wall at the northwest corner,
which may be due to leakage through the roof as opposed to having a structural cause. There
are minor hairline cracks in the top half of the wall at the northeast and northwest corners of
the room. There is also some minor plaster cracking in the bathroom, some of which looks
like it might have been there before and was painted over and has just opened up a little bit.
BASEMENT AND CRAWL SPACE
The basement has poured concrete walls and appears to be part of the original construction.
There is a sump in the east central part with standing water about 5 inches below the top of
slab. The sump has been excavated into the natural ground. The sump used to have a pump.
There is a recently installed gravity drain extending outside the house to the north. There is
t:~projectc~26018~26018.rr~m
