Mrs. Ann Tatum
March 16, 1995
Page 3
the northwest corner of the room, there is a crack that extends from just above the floor up
to the ceiling. This crack isn't continuous because about 6-1 /2 feet high it ends, offsets and
restarts about 1 5 inches out on the wall, then diagonally moves up, meeting the wall again
about 8-1 /2 feet high, then extending up the corner to the ceiling. About 2 feet below the
ceiling, this crack has 1 /8"to 3/16" displacement. Where the crack extends diagonally across
the wall, there are a series of en-echelon cracks, each about 6" to 8" long, again with
displacement of about 1 /8" to 3/8". Looking at the crack, the sense is that the outer wall,
which is the north wall, has rotated outward relative to the north-south interior wall.
At the fireplace at the northeast corner, there is a relatively fresh crack that extends up and
abuts the north wall and then along the center of the flue in the very northeast corner. This
crack has about 1/8" to 3/16" displacement. There are indications of cracks of previous
vintage immediately around the fireplace hearth itself, but these are not through going cracks,
but are more localized around the hearth. At the southeast corner of the room adjacent to the
front porch door there are a series of en-echelon cracks that vertically extend from about 5
feet high up to the ceiling. Maximum displacement here is about 1 /8", but these look
relatively fresh and have cut through the recent painting. I see no indication of previous
repairs or patches at this location.
In the second floor hallway there is a vertical crack at the northeast corner of about 1/8"
displacement. In the bathroom at the southwest corner of the second floor, there is a
significant vertical crack extending top to bottom of the southeast corner of the room, with
a maximum outward displacement of 1 /4" to 3/8". There is a diagonal crack extending
southerly upward from the top south corner of the small window in the west room of the
bathroom. This crack does not go to the ceiling, but goes about 2 feet with an overall angle
of about 60 degrees from the horizontal. There are minor plaster cracks in the other walls.
In the sitting room at the southeast corner of the second floor, there has been extensive
damage to the south wall due to water leakage through cracks in the roof. This has caused
the plaster on the south wall to badly deteriorate. Several large patches of 1 to 2 square feet
have spilled off. There are a series of radial cracks in the plaster with up to 1 /2" displacement
that radiate away from the ceiling about 2-1 /2 feet west of the southeast corner, which
appears to be the focus of the leak. There is a crack with 1 /4" displacement in the northeast
corner. The sense of the displacement is front wall out, or east wall to the east. There is a
closet in the east end of the north wall. A similar crack is found at the rear of the closet, with
3/8" to 1 /2" displacement on the crack. At the ceiling, the plaster wall is pulling away from
the wood ceiling boards. It is evident that the front wall has moved outward relative to the
house.
In the bedroom that occupies the north part of the second floor, there is a substantial
continuous crack, floor to ceiling, at the southeast corner which is immediately contiguous to
the area previously noted, but across the staircase. This crack has about 3/16" to 1/4"
displacement. At the molding at the floor, there is 1!8" to 1 /4" displacement across the room,
where the front wall has moved outward. This cracking is also manifested at the northeast
corner of the room with through-going cracks extending floor to ceiling with about 1 /8" to
f:~propct~~2601 B~26019.rtrm
