within lifts or lack of proper bonding between lifts shall be deemed a failure and will be
' required to be removed and replaced to the satisfaction of the Engineer.
Foundation Requirements for Interior Dike
' The foundation for the interior dike shall have the following requirements for preparation,
' placement and protection:
1. The placement of material on the foundation for all exposed bedrock shall be done to the
lines and grades as shown on the plans. The Engineer shall be on-site during all placement
activities between the bedrock and interior dike embankment. An adequate bond between
the bedrock and the fill is required that meets compaction, moisture requirements.
' 2. No material shall be placed in any portion of the interior dike embanlanent until the
foundation for each section has been dewatered, stripped, scazified and compacted, and has
' been approved by the Engineer.
3. The foundation may be exposed in sections. The Contractor shall prepare a plan that details
' the excavation and embankment placement sequence at the start of the project. The plan will
be updated on a weekly basis for the duration of the project and resubmitted to the Engineer
_ each week as a requirement for approval of pay requests.
4. The amount of time bedrock is exposed shall be limited to one shift, or 12 hours. Between
shifts bedrock must be covered by a minimum of two loose lifts.
5. The maximum number of fill interfaces allowed in the keyway of the interior dike shall be
no more than 3.
6. The foundation preparation shall require the Contractor to expose competent bedrock by the
removal of all weathered, fractured and unsuitable materials as deemed necessary by the
Engineer. The removal may require the use of scrapers, ripping with dozers or other
methods as deemed appropriate. This shall also apply to the key trench in the foundation.
No embankment material shall be placed in the embankment while either the material,
foundation, or embankment on which it would be placed, is frozen.
8. Adequate time shall be allowed by the Contractor for surveying in the location of the key
trench prior beginning placement of embankment. The location of the key trench at both
ends of the interior dike where the slurry wall tie in is planned must be accurately mapped to
give construction control for the wall placement. The Contractor is responsible for
providing the surveying.
Fulton Lake Embankment Specifications and Testing requirements
9000 - 2
